Internet in Montenegro: a pre-trip guide

Internet in Montenegro: small country, big roaming bills

Montenegro draws crowds to the Bay of Kotor and Budva's beaches, but for your phone it is a non-EU country: free EU roaming does not apply and data bills at separate, steep rates that depend on your operator. On the winding coastal roads navigation runs non-stop, so without a package the meter can surprise you on day one.

How much data for a Montenegro holiday?

A week with navigation, messaging and social media usually fits in 5 GB. If you are road-tripping around the country, sharing a hotspot with passengers or staying longer, take 10 GB. The package is valid 30 days from activation and tops up in a minute, no card swap needed.

How to activate your Montenegro eSIM?

The QR code arrives by e-mail right after payment. Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi: scan the code in settings, add the plan, set it as your data line. It only starts counting on first connection to a network in Montenegro, so installing ahead costs nothing. On arrival, enable data roaming for the eSIM line; your own number keeps working.

Coverage in Montenegro and on the Balkan route

The package works in Montenegro on MTEL (LTE): Kotor, Budva, Podgorica and the coastal route. The key perk for drivers: the same wide-coverage eSIM also covers the countries on the way, including Serbia, Bosnia and Albania, so your internet does not stop at any border of a Balkan road trip.

eSIM or a local SIM in Montenegro?

Local prepaid SIMs are cheap but need a store visit, registration and time, and they work in one country only, which on a Balkan route means buying a new card at every border. An eSIM bought before the trip covers the whole route, has a price you know upfront and keeps your number active. For a typical holiday it is simply less hassle.

eSIM Montenegro - FAQ

Does my phone roaming work in Montenegro?

Montenegro is outside the EU "Roam like at home" zone, so your Polish operator charges extra for roaming there - often several złoty per day or more. An eSIM gives you data without those roaming bills, active the moment you arrive.

Does my phone support eSIM?

eSIM works on iPhones from XS/XR (2018) onward and most newer Androids - Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, Google Pixel 3 and later, and many more. If your phone is from the last few years, it almost certainly works. Quick check: in your mobile network settings look for the option to add an eSIM - if it's there, you're set.

Does the eSIM work across Montenegro?

Yes - the plan covers Montenegro on local partner networks, data across Montenegro and the Balkans. Coverage and speed depend on the local operator.

How do I get and install it?

After payment we e-mail a QR code. Open your phone's eSIM settings, scan it, and the data plan is ready. You keep your usual number.

How long is the plan valid?

The plan is valid for 30 days from first use - from when you connect to a network in your destination, not from purchase. So you can buy and install it in advance; the clock starts on arrival.

Do I keep my number and WhatsApp?

Yes. The eSIM runs on data alongside your usual SIM (dual-SIM), so your number, calls, SMS and WhatsApp on your number keep working normally. The eSIM only adds cheap data.

Can I top up when data runs out?

Yes - when you're close to running out, we send you a top-up link. Same number, no card swap, data is back the moment you pay.

Can I share it as a hotspot?

Yes - most plans allow tethering, so you can share the data with a laptop or a travel companion's phone.

When does it start counting?

Install it before you travel - data starts when you connect to a network in your destination, not before.

What if the eSIM doesn't work?

Write to kontakt@roadence.com or reply to your QR-code e-mail. Usually you just need to turn on data roaming for the eSIM in settings - we'll help you step by step, and if needed we'll issue a new eSIM.
