Internet in Egypt: a pre-trip guide
Internet in Egypt: why to sort it before you fly
Egypt is far outside the EU roaming zone, so data from your home plan is billed at high non-EU rates that vary by operator. Hotel Wi-Fi in the resorts is a lottery: it works in the lobby, struggles by the pool and in the rooms, and is often a paid extra. Your own data package solves it for the whole stay: ride-hailing apps in Hurghada, maps on a Luxor day trip and staying in touch all work regardless of the hotel.
How much data for an Egypt holiday?
For a typical week in a resort with messaging, maps and social media, 5 GB is usually plenty, especially if you also use hotel Wi-Fi. For two weeks, video streaming or sharing a hotspot, take 10 GB. The package is valid 30 days from activation and can be topped up in a minute if you run low.
How to activate your Egypt eSIM
The QR code arrives by e-mail right after payment. Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi: scan the code in your phone settings, add the plan and set it as the data line. It only starts counting when it first connects to an Egyptian network, so installing early changes nothing. After landing, enable data roaming for the eSIM line and you are online before you reach baggage claim, with your own number still active.
Where the eSIM works in Egypt
The plan is local and runs on Orange Egypt (LTE) across the country: Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh, Marsa Alam, Cairo or a Nile cruise. You use the network the way local customers do, with no roaming middleman. Deep in the desert coverage gets patchy on every operator; that is the region, not the card.
eSIM or an airport SIM in Hurghada?
SIM stands at Egyptian airports target tourists: prices are inflated, activation fees appear out of nowhere and registration takes your passport and your time right after landing. An eSIM bought before the flight costs what the cart says and works immediately. Unless you are staying for many weeks, there is no practical reason to buy a card on arrival.
eSIM Egypt - FAQ
Does my phone roaming work in Egypt?
Egypt is outside the EU "Roam like at home" zone, so your Polish operator charges extra for roaming there - often several złoty per day or more. An eSIM gives you data without those roaming bills, active the moment you arrive.
Does my phone support eSIM?
eSIM works on iPhones from XS/XR (2018) onward and most newer Androids - Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, Google Pixel 3 and later, and many more. If your phone is from the last few years, it almost certainly works. Quick check: in your mobile network settings look for the option to add an eSIM - if it's there, you're set.
Does the eSIM work across Egypt?
Yes - the plan covers Egypt on local partner networks, data across Egypt and the Red Sea. Coverage and speed depend on the local operator.
How do I get and install it?
After payment we e-mail a QR code. Open your phone's eSIM settings, scan it, and the data plan is ready. You keep your usual number.
How long is the plan valid?
The plan is valid for 30 days from first use - from when you connect to a network in your destination, not from purchase. So you can buy and install it in advance; the clock starts on arrival.
Do I keep my number and WhatsApp?
Yes. The eSIM runs on data alongside your usual SIM (dual-SIM), so your number, calls, SMS and WhatsApp on your number keep working normally. The eSIM only adds cheap data.
Can I top up when data runs out?
Yes - when you're close to running out, we send you a top-up link. Same number, no card swap, data is back the moment you pay.
Can I share it as a hotspot?
Yes - most plans allow tethering, so you can share the data with a laptop or a travel companion's phone.
When does it start counting?
Install it before you travel - data starts when you connect to a network in your destination, not before.
What if the eSIM doesn't work?
Write to kontakt@roadence.com or reply to your QR-code e-mail. Usually you just need to turn on data roaming for the eSIM in settings - we'll help you step by step, and if needed we'll issue a new eSIM.
