Internet in Turkey: a pre-trip guide

Why mobile data in Turkey gets expensive

Turkey sits outside the EU, so the roam like at home rule does not apply. Your operator bills Turkish data at non-EU roaming rates, and the exact price depends on your plan, so check it before you travel. In practice, navigating to your hotel, using maps in Istanbul or sharing photos can cost more than an entire eSIM package. Sorting out your internet before departure is simply cheaper than doing it at the airport.

How much data do you need for Turkey?

For a typical one-week holiday with navigation, maps, messaging and social media, 5 GB is enough for most people. If you are staying longer, watching video or sharing a hotspot with a travel partner, the 10 GB plan is the safer pick and the one most of our customers choose. And if you would rather not count gigabytes at all, there is an Unlimited plan for 7 or 30 days. GB packages stay valid for 30 days from activation and top up in a minute.

How to activate your Turkey eSIM step by step

The QR code lands in your inbox right after payment. The easiest way is to install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi: scan the code in your phone settings, add the plan and set it as your mobile data line. The package only starts counting when it first connects to a Turkish network, so installing early costs you nothing. After landing, switch on data roaming for the eSIM line and you are online, while your own number stays active for calls and texts.

Where the eSIM works in Turkey

This is a local plan running on Turk Telekom with 5G support, covering the whole country: Istanbul, Cappadocia and the Riviera resorts like Antalya, Alanya or Bodrum. You get the same coverage local subscribers use, without expensive maritime or satellite roaming in between. One caution for boat trips: out at sea, phones sometimes latch onto onboard networks that are not part of any land package.

eSIM or a local SIM bought in Turkey?

You can buy a physical SIM locally, but it means a store visit, passport registration and tourist pricing that gets steep at airports. An eSIM bought before the trip costs exactly what you see at checkout, skips the queues on day one and lets you keep your own number. For stays of many weeks a local SIM can pay off; for a holiday of up to a month, the eSIM is simply more convenient.

eSIM Turkey - FAQ

Does my phone roaming work in Turkey?

Turkey is outside the EU "Roam like at home" zone, so your Polish operator charges extra for roaming there - often several złoty per day or more. An eSIM gives you data without those roaming bills, active the moment you arrive.

Does my phone support eSIM?

eSIM works on iPhones from XS/XR (2018) onward and most newer Androids - Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, Google Pixel 3 and later, and many more. If your phone is from the last few years, it almost certainly works. Quick check: in your mobile network settings look for the option to add an eSIM - if it's there, you're set.

Does the eSIM work across Turkey?

Yes - the plan covers Turkey on local partner networks, data across Turkey, a top destination. Coverage and speed depend on the local operator.

How do I get and install it?

After payment we e-mail a QR code. Open your phone's eSIM settings, scan it, and the data plan is ready. You keep your usual number.

How long is the plan valid?

The plan is valid for 30 days from first use - from when you connect to a network in your destination, not from purchase. So you can buy and install it in advance; the clock starts on arrival.

Do I keep my number and WhatsApp?

Yes. The eSIM runs on data alongside your usual SIM (dual-SIM), so your number, calls, SMS and WhatsApp on your number keep working normally. The eSIM only adds cheap data.

Can I top up when data runs out?

Yes - when you're close to running out, we send you a top-up link. Same number, no card swap, data is back the moment you pay.

Can I share it as a hotspot?

Yes - most plans allow tethering, so you can share the data with a laptop or a travel companion's phone.

When does it start counting?

Install it before you travel - data starts when you connect to a network in your destination, not before.

What if the eSIM doesn't work?

Write to kontakt@roadence.com or reply to your QR-code e-mail. Usually you just need to turn on data roaming for the eSIM in settings - we'll help you step by step, and if needed we'll issue a new eSIM.
