Which way to drive?
The classic western route runs through Czechia (D1/D2), Austria (via Vienna or Graz) and Slovenia (Maribor-Ljubljana) into Croatia at Bregana - the fastest option for most of Poland, with three vignettes on the way. From south-eastern Poland some drivers prefer the eastern variant through Slovakia and Hungary (Budapest), entering Croatia from the Slavonia side - two cheaper vignettes, but usually a longer drive.

- •Austria - 10-day vignette, 69 zł (alpine tunnels like Karawanks are tolled separately),
- •Slovenia - weekly e-vignette, 85 zł; for a two-week holiday you need two, or the monthly one,
- •Croatia itself has no vignette - you pay section tolls at the gates or with ENC.
Croatian tolls
Croatia charges per section driven. As a reference, the A1 from Zagreb down to Split costs roughly 25-30 EUR one way for a car; the Ucka tunnel and some bridges are billed separately. In summer, card queues at the gates get long - the electronic ENC transponder lane is noticeably faster.
When to set off
July and August Saturdays are the worst: changeover day at the coast plus everyone else's holiday start. If you can, drive Tuesday to Thursday, cross Austria at night, and you will skip both the border queues at Bregana/Macelj and the toll-gate jams before Zadar and Split.
How far and how long?
Warsaw to Split is about 1,450 km - a solid 13-14 hours of pure driving, so most families split it with an overnight stop around Vienna, Graz or Zagreb. From southern Poland (Krakow, Katowice, Wroclaw) the trip is 2-3 hours shorter and doable in one long day.
