Driving to Czechia: the practical guide

Which way to drive?

To Prague from southern Poland you take the A1 through Ostrava and the Czech D1; from Wroclaw the shortest run goes via Kudowa and Nachod on national roads, joining the motorway near Hradec Kralove. Warsaw-Prague is about 680 km, Krakow-Prague 535 km, Wroclaw-Prague only 270 km.

What you pay on the way

  • Czechia - 1-day e-vignette for 52 zł covers a weekend city break arrival; for a return later than same day take the 10-day one for 65 zł,
  • the vignette is checked by camera on motorways including the D1 and D8 approaches; a few short border sections are exempt, but do not count on skipping it for a Prague trip,
  • parking in Prague is the real cost - use P+R lots at metro stations (a few euro per day) instead of the paid zones downtown.

Watch out

Czech cameras read your plate automatically - a vignette bought after you have already driven the motorway does not protect you retroactively. Buy before departure and check the plate twice: a typo counts as no vignette.

Distance and time

Wroclaw-Prague is a 3.5-hour hop, Krakow about 5 hours via Ostrava, Warsaw 6.5-7. For a weekend, leaving Friday after work and returning Sunday evening fits the 10-day vignette window with room to spare.
