Driving to Germany: the practical guide

The best news first

German autobahns are FREE for passenger cars - no vignette, no tolls, on the whole network. From Poznan or Wroclaw you are in Berlin in about 3 hours; Warsaw-Berlin via the A2 is around 570 km.

What can cost you instead

  • Umwelt zones: most big German cities (Berlin, Munich, Cologne, Stuttgart...) require a green emissions sticker on the windscreen to enter the centre,
  • the sticker is a one-off purchase, valid for the car's lifetime - we can arrange one for you before the trip,
  • driving into a zone without it is an 80-100 EUR fine, even if your car meets the norms - the sticker itself is what is checked.

Watch out

The A2/A10 around Berlin flows well outside rush hours, but roadworks corridors with 80 km/h limits are camera-heavy. And a German classic: the left lane moves VERY fast - check your mirror twice before overtaking.

Distance and time

Warsaw-Berlin about 5.5 hours, Poznan-Berlin under 3, Wroclaw-Dresden about 2.5. For Munich count 9-10 hours from Warsaw - Dresden or Nuremberg make a natural break.
