Which way to drive?
Into Slovakia you cross at Chyzne (towards Orava and the Tatras), Lysa Polana (Zakopane side) or Barwinek (towards Kosice in the east). Krakow-Poprad under the High Tatras is about 170 km, Krakow-Bratislava around 460 km via Zilina.
When you need the vignette - and when you do not
- •local Tatra roads (Zdiar, Strbske Pleso, Poprad on national roads) need NO vignette - many day-trippers pay for nothing,
- •driving the D1 motorway (Zilina-Poprad-Kosice) or towards Bratislava - 1-day e-vignette for 45 zł or 10-day for 59 zł,
- •transiting Slovakia towards Hungary or the Balkans - the 1-day vignette per crossing is usually the cheapest correct choice.
Watch out
Slovak enforcement is camera-based and the fine arrives by post. The trap is joining the D1 'for a moment' near Poprad - even one interchange counts. If your plans include any motorway stretch, the 1-day vignette costs less than the risk.
Distance and time
Krakow to the Tatras is 2.5-3 hours, to Kosice about 3.5 via Barwinek, to Bratislava 5-5.5 via Zilina. From Warsaw add roughly 3.5 hours to each.
